A Link From Your Mom

An acquaintance of mine from college, Jen, brought this great link to my attention: Postcards From Yo Momma. Despite the dumb name, the site manages to be both hilarious and sweet at the same time. The concept is simple: it’s a collection of reader submissions of emails they get from their moms. I know I found myself laughing one minute and missing my mom the next. It’s kind of like Chicken Soup for the Soul mixed up with Overheard in New York.

After reading through a couple of pages, the eerie similarities that apparently span all moms start to emerge, which makes you realize that although all of our moms are special in their own quirky ways, there are some things that seem to be utterly universal.

For example, all moms are a bit more interested in the weather - both where they are located and where you are located, as well as the exact highs and lows and possibly the humidity — than any other humans. And all moms seem to have adorable and vague words for gross bodily functions, such as “Your Cycle” and “Your Tummy Issues.”

More importantly, all moms seem more concerned about you than anyone else in the world, and sincerely, truly, want you to be safe and well.

I love the one that starts with “Nothing makes me more unhappy than to think that you don’t love me. nothing. I will send you some money today.”

My Mom still gets a kick out of the fact that her HOTMAIL (lame!) account allows her to put little hearts, rainbows, and smilies in her messages. She recently put a rainbow graphic in a message and wrote “Now you can say that you saw a rainbow today!!!”

In case you’re up early reading comments, your photo link is broken.

This makes me wish I’d saved the e-mail my Mormon mom sent to me the other day.

She said she loves me and misses me so much that if I pooped in a jar and sent it to her she’d keep it in the China cabinet.

Thanks?

That weather thing is SO true. I’m pretty sure every single phone conversation I have with my mom involves the weather at some point.

Also, yesterday my mom left us an answering machine message and for some reason felt the need to remind us that she was “in Massachusetts.” You know, where my parents live. And have lived. My entire life.

Maybe since I live in PA now she thought I needed a reminder??

Oh, and like Jess, my mom LOVES to put smilies in her e-mails. One time she put in one to represent herself, and then one to represent my dad- with a cowboy hat on.
Moms are hilarious, and pretty great, too. :)

Thanks for the laugh! I’m afraid that not only do I have that kind of mother, but that I also AM that kind of a mother. Ouch.
